How to sign a PDF

Open your PDF
Press Select a PDF file, drop the document or paste it anywhere on the page, or press Try a sample PDF. It opens full screen with page thumbnails on the left.

Make your signature
The signature pad opens first. Pick Draw, Type or Upload. Draw with a mouse, trackpad or finger in navy, black or blue ink, type your name and choose a style, or upload a photo of your signature. Leave Remember on this device ticked to reuse it next time.

Place and size it
Click the page where the signature goes. Drag the corners to resize it and drag the middle to move it. Pick the Signature tool again to place another copy on any line or page. Use Text and Date for your printed name, initials and today's date.

Download
Press Download. Flatten everything is preselected, so the signature, answers and comments all become part of the page. Save the file ending in -signed.pdf. Your original file stays as it was.

How to sign a PDF with a clean signature
Drawn signatures come in navy, black or blue ink, and typed ones in navy. Drawn and uploaded signatures are trimmed to the ink, so there is no empty border around them.
- Draw: works best on a touchscreen or with a stylus. Sign large across the pad. Press Clear to start over.
- Type: shows your name in a Handwritten, Classic or Brush style. It suits informal approvals where a typed name is accepted.
- Upload: a photo or scan of your signature on white paper. The paper background is removed automatically, so only the ink sits on the page.
Placing the signature and signing more pages
The Signature tool places a copy centred where you click, then switches to Select so you can adjust it. Aim for the middle of the signature line, then drag the corners until it fits. To sign another line or page, pick the Signature tool again and click. Use the page thumbnails or scroll to reach other pages.
Use the Text tool to type a printed name or initials, the Date tool to add today's date, and the check mark or cross to tick boxes. Everything stays movable until you download. To add a second signer, open the downloaded -signed.pdf in eSign PDF again and repeat.
Flatten or keep form fields
Your signature, text and dates are drawn into the page either way. Flatten everything also turns filled form fields and comments into page content, which is best when you are sending the final copy. Keep form fields editable leaves fillable fields fillable, for a form someone else still has to complete.
What this kind of signature is
eSign PDF adds a visible image of your signature. It is not a certificate-based digital signature. It does not prove who you are, and it does not show whether the file changed after signing. Some contracts, filings and regulated processes need a certificate-based signature, so check what the recipient accepts.
To keep the signed copy from being opened by the wrong person, add a password with Protect PDF before you send it.
