Resize PDF Pages, free and private

Resize PDF pages to A4, Letter, A3, A5, B5, Legal, Tabloid or a custom size in millimetres or inches. This changes the page size, the paper the document is laid out on. It does not make the file smaller in MB. For a smaller file, use Compress PDF, or Compress PDF to Size for a limit like 200 KB.

Every page goes onto the new sheet, and you choose how the content sits on it: Fit, Fill or Stretch. Use it to turn a US Letter report into A4 for a European printer, or to put mixed scans onto one paper size. The PDF is resized in your browser and never uploaded.

How to resize PDF pages

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Press Select a PDF or drop the file onto the page. The tool resizes every page of one document.

  2. 2

    Pick the page size

Under Page size, choose a standard size such as A4, Letter or Legal. Or choose Custom and enter the width and height in millimetres or inches. Custom starts at 210 × 297 mm (A4), and each side must be at least 25 mm. The placement previews show your first page on the new size.

  3. 3

    Choose the content placement

Fit is the default and shows the whole page, with blank bands where the shapes differ. Fill covers the sheet and cuts off what overflows. Stretch forces the content to the exact new size.

  4. 4

    Resize and download

Press Resize pages. The result shows how many pages were changed. Open Preview to check them, then press Download PDF. The new file name ends in -resized.

Why use PDFToolz for this

Text stays sharp

Each page is placed on the new sheet as a scaled copy of its own content, not as a screenshot. Text stays selectable and searchable, and lines and fonts stay crisp at any size.

Landscape stays landscape

With Orientation on Match each page, each new page takes the orientation of its source page. A landscape page goes onto a landscape A4 sheet, so a portrait report with one wide table comes out right. You can also force every page to portrait or landscape.

Rotated and cropped pages handled

Pages are drawn upright, the way your viewer shows them, even if they carry a rotation setting. Only the visible area is used, so pages you cropped earlier stay cropped.

Free and private

No account, watermark or page limit. The pages are resized on your device and the file is never sent anywhere.

Resize PDF page size or reduce file size?

People search for resize PDF when they mean two different things. This tool changes the page size. The file keeps the same text, images and fonts, so its size in MB stays about the same. Making a small page bigger does not make the file heavier either.

If an email or upload form rejected your PDF as too big, use Compress PDF. Its Recommended level shrinks large photos and keeps text selectable. If the form names a limit, such as 100 KB or 1 MB, use Compress PDF to Size. If you need both, resize the pages first and compress the result.

How to resize a PDF to A4

A4 (210 × 297 mm) is the standard paper size in Europe and most of the world. US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) and US Legal (8.5 × 14 in) are used in the United States and Canada. Pick A4, keep Fit selected and press Resize pages. The PDF then prints on A4 paper without the printer shrinking or clipping it.

By default you don't need a landscape setting. Portrait pages go onto portrait A4 and landscape pages onto landscape A4. Custom works the same way. Set Orientation to Portrait or Landscape to put every page one way. The guide PDF page sizes in points, mm and pixels lists the common sizes.

Fit, Fill and Stretch explained

Your pages rarely have the same shape as the new sheet. A4 is narrower and taller than Letter, and Legal is taller again. The placement mode decides what happens to that difference:

  • Fit scales each page until the whole page fits, then centres it. Nothing is cut off, but you get blank bands where the shapes differ. Letter to A4 shrinks the content by about 3% and adds space above and below. A4 to Letter shrinks it by about 6% and adds space at the sides. Pick Fit for contracts, forms and anything you will print.
  • Fill scales each page until the sheet is fully covered, then cuts equal amounts from the edges that overflow. There is no distortion and no blank band, but page numbers, headers or footnotes near those edges can be lost.
  • Stretch scales width and height separately so the page matches the new size exactly. Nothing is cut off, but the content is distorted. Letter to A4 makes everything about 9% taller relative to its width, which shows on logos, photos and circles.

What to check after resizing

The resized PDF is a new document built from the visible content of your pages. Keep the original if you need anything from this list:

  • Web links keep working. Links that jump to another page in the file, bookmarks, form fields and comments are not carried over. Flatten a filled form with Flatten PDF first so the answers stay on the page.
  • Document details such as title and author are not copied.
  • Enlarging a small page, say A5 to A4, keeps text crisp, but a low-resolution scan gets bigger without gaining detail.
  • To trim margins without scaling, use Crop PDF. To print several pages on one sheet, use N-up PDF.
