PDF to PNG Converter, free and private

This PDF to PNG converter saves PDF pages as lossless PNG images at 72, 150 or 300 DPI. Text, tables and line drawings stay crisp, with none of the blur JPG adds around sharp edges. Convert every page or only the pages you pick, on a white or a transparent background.

One page downloads as a single PNG, and two or more come as one ZIP. Pages are drawn in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded. There is no account, page limit or watermark.

How to convert a PDF to PNG

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Press Select a PDF file or drop a PDF on the page. The tool converts one document at a time.

  2. 2

    Choose the pages

Leave Pages on All pages, or press Choose pages and tap the thumbnails or type pages like 1-3, 7.

  3. 3

    Pick resolution and background

Under Resolution, choose 72, 150 or 300 DPI. 150 DPI is the default. Under Background, keep White or choose Transparent.

  4. 4

    Convert and download

Press Convert to PNG. One page gives a single file such as report-page-3.png. More pages give one ZIP with a PNG for each page.

Why use PDFToolz for this

Lossless pages

PNG stores every pixel exactly as drawn. Small print, thin table borders and chart labels look the same as in a PDF viewer at that resolution.

Transparent background

With Transparent on, the parts of the page with nothing drawn on them are see-through. Drop a logo, signature or diagram onto a coloured slide and no white box shows around it.

Only the pages you need

Convert one page, a range or a mix like 2, 5-8. You don't need to split the PDF first.

Names that sort in order

Page numbers in the file names are zero-padded, so page-02 comes before page-10 in any folder.

Why convert a PDF to PNG instead of JPG

JPG saves space by discarding fine detail. On photos the loss is hard to see. On text it leaves faint grey smudges around letters and lines, which show up when you zoom in, crop or print. PNG keeps every pixel, so a page of text stays as sharp as the resolution allows.

PNG files are larger. PNG compresses flat areas of colour well, so text pages, forms and diagrams stay fairly small. Pages full of photos come out much larger than the same page as a JPG. For those, PDF to JPG is the better choice.

  • Choose PNG for text-heavy pages, forms, spreadsheets, charts, maps, plans and screenshots for documentation.
  • Choose PNG when you will edit the image, crop it or save it again, since PNG loses nothing each time it is saved.
  • Choose PNG when you need a transparent background. JPG has no transparency at all.
  • Choose JPG for brochures and photo pages, or when an upload form has a strict size limit.

How the transparent background works

A PDF page has no colour of its own. Viewers paint it white and draw the content on top. With Background set to Transparent, the tool skips that white fill, so only text, lines and images end up in the PNG.

Some PDFs draw their own white or coloured box behind the content, and a scanned page is one big photo. Those pages stay solid, because the box or the scan is part of the content. Logos, signatures and diagrams exported from design or office apps often come out see-through.

Black text on a transparent PNG is hard to read on a dark background. If the image is going onto a dark slide or a dark-mode page, check it there before you share it.

Which DPI to choose for PNG

DPI is pixels per inch of paper. Doubling the DPI doubles the width and height, so the image has four times the pixels and the file grows by roughly as much. At 300 DPI a page full of photos can reach 10 MB or more as a PNG.

  • 72 DPI · Screen: A4 is 595 × 842 pixels and Letter 612 × 792. Good for thumbnails, previews and chat messages.
  • 150 DPI · Standard: A4 is 1240 × 1754 pixels and Letter 1275 × 1650. Sharp in slides, documents and on most screens.
  • 300 DPI · Print: A4 is 2480 × 3508 pixels and Letter 2550 × 3300. Use it for printing, for OCR in another app, or when readers will zoom into small text.

Tips and limits

Each PNG is a picture of the whole page, so the text in it can't be selected or searched. To keep editable text, use PDF to Word or PDF to Text. To save the photos inside a PDF at their original size rather than a picture of the page, use Extract Images.

If the PDF asks for a password to open, remove it with Unlock PDF first. To turn PNG files back into a PDF, use JPG / PNG to PDF.
