HEIC to PDF Converter, free and private
This HEIC to PDF converter turns iPhone photos into one PDF, one photo per page, in the order you choose. It reads HEIC and HEIF files, and also the JPG and PNG files an iPhone saves when its camera is set to Most Compatible. Photos taken sideways come out the right way up.
Each photo is read by the image decoder built into your browser, so nothing is uploaded. Safari on a Mac and every browser on an iPhone or iPad can read HEIC. Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows, Android and Mac cannot, and the tool tells you how to get a JPG copy instead.
How to convert HEIC to PDF
- 1
Add your iPhone photos
Press Select photos or drop HEIC, HEIF, JPG or PNG files on the page. On an iPhone, pick shots straight from your photo library. Use Add more for further photos.
- 2
Put the photos in order
Each photo gets a numbered card. Use the ‹ and › buttons to move it earlier or later. The number is the page it becomes.
- 3
Choose page size, orientation and margin
Under Page size, pick A4, Letter or Fit image. With Orientation on Auto, portrait photos get portrait pages and landscape photos get landscape pages. Margin sets the white border around each photo. The page previews show each page before you convert.
- 4
Convert HEIC to PDF and download
Press Create PDF, then Preview to check the pages or Download PDF to save the file. The PDF takes the name of the first photo, such as IMG_4021.pdf.
Why use PDFToolz for this
HEIC decoded on your device
Safari turns each HEIC photo into pixels on your Mac, iPhone or iPad. The tool stores the result in the PDF as a JPG at quality 92 out of 100, which keeps the fine detail of a phone photo.
JPG files go in untouched
JPG files are embedded byte for byte, with no recompression. If your iPhone already saves JPG, the PDF holds exactly the photos you took. PNG files, such as screenshots, are stored without loss.
Sideways photos turned upright
An iPhone often stores a photo sideways and records how to turn it. The browser applies that record to HEIC photos and the tool applies it to JPGs, mirrored selfies included, so each page shows the photo the way you held the phone.
No upload and no account
The photos are read and placed into the PDF by JavaScript in your browser tab. They never reach a server, and the PDF carries no watermark.
What a HEIC file is
HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. It compresses a photo with the HEVC video codec, so a HEIC file is often about half the size of a JPG of the same quality.
The catch is support. Many upload forms, print shops and Windows PCs can't open HEIC, and most browsers can't either. A PDF opens on every phone and computer, which makes it a safe way to send a set of photos, receipts or ID scans.
Convert HEIC to PDF on iPhone, Mac and Windows
Whether HEIC works depends on the browser, because the tool uses the browser's own decoder rather than uploading your photos to a server that has one.
- iPhone and iPad. Open this page in Safari or any other browser. They all use Apple's WebKit engine, which reads HEIC. Tap Select photos and pick from your library.
- Mac. Use Safari. Chrome and Firefox on a Mac can't read HEIC, so the tool stops there with a message.
- Windows and Android. Browsers on these systems can't decode HEIC. Make JPG copies first, as described below, and add the JPGs here.
How to get JPG instead of HEIC from an iPhone
Any of these gives you files that every browser can convert:
- For new photos, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. The camera then saves JPG.
- When you copy photos to a computer with a cable, open Settings, then Photos, and under Transfer to Mac or PC choose Automatic. The iPhone converts the photos to JPG on the way.
- On a Mac, open the photo in Preview, choose File, then Export, and pick JPEG as the format.
- On Windows with the HEIF Image Extensions installed, open the photo in the Photos app and save a copy as JPG.
Page size, orientation and margin
These options decide how each photo sits on its page. The photo keeps its proportions and is centred. Nothing is stretched or cropped.
- A4 is the default, with pages of 210 × 297 mm. Letter uses 8.5 × 11 inch pages, the standard in the US and Canada.
- Fit image makes each page the shape of its photo, sized as if the photo were printed at 150 DPI. No page side is longer than 297 mm, the long side of A4. With No margin, a 4032 × 3024 iPhone photo gives a page of about 297 × 223 mm.
- Orientation Auto turns each A4 or Letter page to match its photo. Portrait and Landscape give every page the same direction.
- Margin Normal, the default, leaves 12.7 mm of white around each photo. Small leaves 6.35 mm, and No margin lets the photo touch the page edge on its longer side.
Quality, file size and what is kept
HEIC photos are stored as JPG at quality 92. Photos above 16 megapixels, such as 48 MP shots from recent iPhones, are scaled down to 16 megapixels, about 4600 × 3460 pixels. That is still close to 400 DPI on a full A4 page, and it keeps the conversion inside the memory a phone browser allows.
Every 12 megapixel photo adds a few megabytes, so a PDF of twenty photos can be too big to email. Run it through Compress PDF, or use Compress PDF to Size to aim for a limit such as 10 MB.
- A HEIC photo's metadata, including its GPS location, is not copied into the PDF.
- JPG files are embedded unchanged, so any metadata inside them, GPS location included, stays inside the PDF.
- For a Live Photo, only the still image is used. HDR brightness data is dropped, so an HDR photo looks like its standard version.
Fixing common problems
Most problems come from the browser or the source photo:
- The tool says this browser can't open HEIC photos. Switch to Safari on a Mac or to any browser on an iPhone, or add JPG copies.
- A page still shows sideways. The photo was saved turned, with no record of how to fix it. Turn the page afterwards with Rotate PDF.
- The photos show paper documents at an angle. Scan to PDF crops the background, straightens the page and whitens the paper.
- You need text you can search or copy. Photos have no text layer, so run the finished PDF through OCR PDF.
