PDF to EPUB Converter, free and private
Convert a PDF to EPUB and read it like a real ebook. The converter rebuilds the PDF's text as reflowable paragraphs, headings, lists and tables, splits it into chapters at the PDF's headings, adds a table of contents and the images, and makes a cover from the first page.
Text in an EPUB adapts to the screen and the font size you choose, so a document that is hard to read as fixed A4 pages on a phone or e-reader becomes comfortable to read. The conversion runs in your browser, so the PDF is never uploaded, and it is free with no sign-up.
How to convert a PDF to EPUB
- 1
Add your PDF
Press Select a PDF file or drop the PDF on the page. Its text is read straight away and the Contents tab lists the chapters that were found.
- 2
Check the chapters
Tap a chapter in Contents to read it in the Chapter tab. If a running header or page number shows up in the text, keep Remove headers and footers on.
- 3
Set the book details
The book title starts as the file name; change it and add an author if you like. Set the language code, such as en, de or fr, so e-readers pick the right hyphenation and dictionary.
- 4
Convert and download
Choose whether to include images and a cover, pick the pages if you only need some, then press Convert to EPUB and Download EPUB.
Why use PDFToolz for this
Chapters and a table of contents
The book is split into chapters at the PDF's main headings, and the chapter titles become the ebook's table of contents. A PDF without headings is split into parts of even length.
Reflowable text
Paragraphs broken across lines and pages are joined back together, so the text flows to fit any screen and font size instead of fixed pages.
Images and a cover
Pictures from the PDF are placed between the paragraphs where they appeared. The first converted page becomes the cover shown in your library.
Standard EPUB 3
The file follows EPUB 3 and includes an EPUB 2 table of contents too, for older readers. It is made for EPUB apps and devices such as Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo and Calibre.
Private
The PDF is read with pdf.js and the ebook is packed on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
Which PDFs convert well to EPUB
PDFs made from a word processor or exported from a website, such as reports, novels, papers, manuals and long articles, convert best, because their text is stored in reading order with clear headings.
- Single-column text converts cleanly. Two-column pages are read left column first.
- Simple tables become real tables. Complex layouts such as magazines, comics, brochures and forms lose their design, because an EPUB reflows text and cannot keep a fixed page layout.
- Maths formulas, charts drawn as vector shapes and text inside images are not converted to text.
- A scanned PDF has no text to read. Run it through OCR PDF first and convert the result.
Reading the EPUB on a Kindle
Amazon's Send to Kindle service accepts EPUB files: send the .epub by email to your Kindle address, or upload it with the Send to Kindle app or website, and it arrives in your Kindle library converted for the device. Older MOBI and AZW3 formats are not needed for this.
On Apple Books, Google Play Books or a Kobo, open or upload the .epub file directly.
Why not keep the PDF?
A PDF fixes every line to a page size. On a 6-inch e-reader or a phone, an A4 page has to be shrunk until the text is tiny, or zoomed and scrolled sideways. An EPUB lets the reader set the font, size and margins and the text rewraps to fit. If the exact page look matters more, such as for a form or a designed brochure, keep the PDF.
