Remove Blank Pages from PDF, free and private

Remove blank pages from a PDF for free. The tool checks every page, marks the ones that are empty or nearly empty, and saves a new PDF without them. It is built for scans from a duplex scanner, where the back of every one-sided sheet turns into a blank page.

You see each page as a thumbnail before anything is deleted. Detected blanks start marked with a red cross, a slider decides how strict the check is, and a tap on any page keeps or removes it. The PDF is read in your browser and never uploaded.

How to remove blank pages from a PDF

  1. 1

    Add your PDF

Press Select a PDF or drop the file onto the page. The tool opens it and checks the pages one by one, with a counter that shows how far it has got.

  2. 2

    Check the detected blank pages

Pages that look blank fade and get a red cross. On each thumbnail you see the share of the page covered by ink, such as 0.02% ink, or Empty for a page that draws nothing at all.

  3. 3

    Adjust the sensitivity

Move the Sensitivity slider between 1 and 10. Raise it if blank pages with scanner noise or a page number are not marked. Lower it if a page with a little real content is marked.

  4. 4

    Tap pages to change them

Tap a marked page to keep it, or tap an unmarked page to remove it as well. Press Reset to detected to undo your taps.

  5. 5

    Remove blank pages and download

Press Remove blank pages. The new PDF holds every unmarked page in the original order, and its name ends in -no-blank-pages.

Why use PDFToolz for this

Detects blank pages in scanned PDFs

Each page is drawn at up to 60 DPI and measured for dark pixels. A band of 6% along every edge is ignored, so scanner shadows, punch holes, staples and running headers do not stop a page from counting as blank.

Ignores scanner noise

A dark pixel only counts when at least two of its neighbours are dark too, which drops single specks of dust. Marks that are only slightly darker than the paper are skipped as well, such as faint show-through from the other side of the sheet.

Works on gray and colored paper

Ink is measured against the paper of each page, not against pure white. A blank page on recycled gray paper or a yellow form still counts as blank. A page filled with a dark or strong color, such as a colored divider sheet, counts as full of ink and is kept.

Deletes empty pages in digital PDFs

The tool also reads the drawing commands of each page that looks blank. A page that contains no text, images or drawn shapes is marked as Empty and removed at every sensitivity level. Exported reports and Word files often end with a page like this.

Nothing is re-rendered

The kept pages are copied into the new file as they are. Text stays selectable, scans keep their original resolution, and page sizes and rotation do not change.

Free and private

No account, watermark or page limit. The check and the copy happen in your browser, so the PDF stays on your device.

How to delete blank pages from a scanned PDF

A duplex scanner scans both sides of every sheet. When half the stack is printed on one side only, the PDF has a blank page after every page of content. Add that PDF here, check that the marked pages are the empty backs, and press Remove blank pages. A 40-sheet scan of single-sided pages goes from 80 pages back to 40.

Blank backs are rarely pure white. They carry paper texture, dust, a gray edge from the scanner lid and sometimes faint text showing through from the front. The default sensitivity of 5 treats a page as blank when less than 0.1% of it is ink, which covers these marks and still keeps a page with a single line of text.

What the sensitivity levels mean

The slider sets the most ink a page may have and still count as blank. Ink is the share of the page, inside the ignored edge band, that is clearly darker than the paper.

  • Level 1 allows 0.01% ink. Only pages that are almost spotless are marked.
  • Level 5 allows 0.1% ink. This is the default and suits most scans. A page with only a page number or a short stamp usually counts as blank.
  • Level 8 allows 0.4% ink. Use it for noisy scans with heavy dust or dark paper texture.
  • Level 10 allows 1% ink. Pages with a short heading or a signature line may be marked, so check the thumbnails before you save.

Pages that say this page intentionally left blank

Printed reports and manuals often hold pages with that one sentence. A centered line of this length usually measures between 0.1% and 0.3% ink, so the default level often keeps it. Look at the ink figure on its thumbnail. If it is not marked, raise the slider to 7 or 8, or tap the page to remove it by hand.

Remove blank pages or delete pages by number

Remove Blank Pages decides for you which pages are empty, which saves time on long scans. When you already know the page numbers, Delete PDF Pages is quicker, since you can type a list like 2, 5-7. To change the order of pages or rotate them as well, use Delete / Reorder.

Limits and what is not kept

The new PDF is built from the kept pages, so bookmarks and the document outline are not carried over. Web links on the pages keep working. Fillable form fields may stop working, so fill in a form before you remove pages.

If the PDF needs a password to open, remove it with Unlock PDF first. PDFs that open without a password but block editing are handled here directly. Very long scans take longer on a phone than on a computer, because every page has to be drawn once to be measured.

Detection looks at how much ink a page has, not at what it means. A page with only a light pencil note or a pale watermark can be marked as blank, so look over the marked pages before you save.
